In fact, 'just' is not quite rightly used here; we came in fact few days ago. It is that I managed to write about it 'just now'. And here goes my interesting and a bit weird self-observation. After more than three weeks of being disconnected from my usual digital flows (blogs, WoW, SL etc.) I now experience a strange kind of digital post-coma feeling.
I am afraid to go back to (or into) all these digital realms, or worlds, and feel very unconfident and uneasy about doing so. It is a feeling of being 'lower than n00b' on some sort of digital scale. Moreover, it is also a lack of any desire to go there, or at least a certain reluctance, and resistance.
The paradox is that during this long break I somehow mentally was always 'in': when taking pictures I thought about possible blog postings with them, or when admiring wonderful Lego sculptures in the Legoland park in Germany I was imaging creating something similar in SL. In some sense, in my mind I was never disconnected.
And yet, when finally getting 'back to normal', when plugging in all these digital flows I feel this very strange stupor and arrest. Even when I do try to mimic my usual 'digital activities' (for example, I already posted all the pictures in my visual blog aman geld, or write this very posting) I still feel very empty, very hollow about doing that; no usual joyful emotions evoked. What a bizarre sensation!
Just finished my second presentation in SL, on experience design process (of Philips Design, obviously) . As before, feel exhausted and excited at the same time (part of the exhaustion comes from my hand, I again have some kind of RSI attack, my right wrist hurts a bit). But also, the event lasted almost almost 3 hours (2 were planned, but people started to come earlier to our plot, and many stayed much later after it.)
The discussion was very lively, bit more hectic than the first time, but at the same time much richer, and with more 'tangents'. Main topic aside, I liked the discussions about digital experiences, and on brining sensorial dimensions (back?) to it. Also, when talking about co-creation in the digital domains, people skid to the 'open source' paradigm so effortlessly, that it even starts to worry a bit; as if there is no other choice (of the 'good' ones of course :)
But after all, it was a very rewarding 'experience'; as a bonus track, I also met two very good RL friends who finally make their way to SL (and whom I didn't see in RL for ages, so it was really great.) The last moments again caused a bit of tear-dropping, when we asked people to make a group photo, and all the visitors fled to upper platform; it was very moving.
We will run this presentation one more time this Friday (10-12 am CET, don't remember the SL time; it's written on the board on our site). In principle, it is mostly for the group members, but I guess all other interested folks are very welcome.
Besides the presentation (in chat), 30m long board with our 'experience design' process visualization and a nice clip based on the AmEc project, we also distribute a paper about "Experience Evaluation" (and 'free beer' - as 'free beer', not as 'free speech' :)
PS: That's me watching the photo of the first presentation; if I would put it to the frame, I could also make a photo of me watching me watching me... but fortunately, we will run it only three times, so no infinite loops are intended.
The key meanings of the word zin are as complex and divers as
1. personal belief or judgment, especially if it is not founded on proof or certainty (~ opinion, view, or sentiment)
2. belief or sentiment shared by most people (~ public opinion, vox populi)
3. anticipated outcome that is intended or that guides your planned actions (~ purpose, intent, intention, aim, but also design)
4. experiencing of affective and emotional states (~ feeling)
5. message that is intended or expressed or signified (~ meaning, significance, signification)
6. general atmosphere of a place or situation and the effect it has on people (~ spirit, tone, feel, flavor, look, smell, flavor etc)
7. feeling that accompanies an unsatisfied state (~ desire, unfinished geshtalt)
8. idea that is intended, especially deep and profound (meaning, sense, substance)
9. purpose, or destination of life, or other endeavor (~ as in 'purpose of life')
and yet it can also mean something as simple as
10. a string of words satisfying the grammatical rules of a language (~ sentence)
I spent last two days in Zin, an ex-monastery aka business retreat, a temporary place of residency for many famous Dutch artists and writers and a charity providing work, support and healing for mentally handicapped (or challenged, as Americans say) people. An extremely calm and tranquil place where we had one of the most intensive creative workshops of the last two years.
Ik had een heel bizondere ervaring! More stories will follow.
Sweden is one of the first countries which decided, quite bravely, to open their Embassy in Second Life (technically speaking, Maldives were the first nations, but the size and complexity of the Swedish project makes them truly pioneers of virtual diplomacy (or is it a diplomatic virtuality?)
More about this project can be found in the article Sweden's virtual embassy in Second Life: Now featuring Geoglobe.I like the design and look&feel of the Swedish House's interior very appealing, and perfectly radiating the 'swedishness' of the Swedes. Those of us who come to Ikea shops frequently, will find themselves very well at home at this site.
Piece of good nice art, cozy furniture and tranquil nature are everywhere, but the real hit of virtual embassy is not am impressive (though a bit claustrophobic globe mentioned in the article). The real gem is the Wallenberg Room, that not just 'tells' but powerfully reconstruct the atmosphere, thrilling and depressing at the same time.
The Swedish Institute who is behind this historical project, managed to create a very powerful experience using a bunch of quite simple tools: you enter the room through a dark, almost black entry, the look&feel of the space is also much darker and sober compared to the rest of the Embassy; there is a background music playing somewhere in a background mixed with children voices which creates very mystical, Pink Floydian ambience. The room is full of the items of those times: a typewriter, an old telephone, posters and old photos on the walls. A fragment the 'street life' is visible from the window (a mere picture, but a very nice visual solution creating strong immersive effect).
The map on the wall is of the 'safe' Swedish houses in Budapest (where Raoul Wallenberg was rescuing Hungarian Jews from Nazis). There's also a link to a web-site describing the Gulag system (where some people believe Wallenberg actually died; though an 'official' version states he died in Lubyanka in Moscow.)
A really moving environment, and tragic story-telling. But also overall, one of the best serious projects I've seen so far in SL, kudos to the guys!
