Just finished my second presentation in SL, on experience design process (of Philips Design, obviously) . As before, feel exhausted and excited at the same time (part of the exhaustion comes from my hand, I again have some kind of RSI attack, my right wrist hurts a bit). But also, the event lasted almost almost 3 hours (2 were planned, but people started to come earlier to our plot, and many stayed much later after it.)
The discussion was very lively, bit more hectic than the first time, but at the same time much richer, and with more 'tangents'. Main topic aside, I liked the discussions about digital experiences, and on brining sensorial dimensions (back?) to it. Also, when talking about co-creation in the digital domains, people skid to the 'open source' paradigm so effortlessly, that it even starts to worry a bit; as if there is no other choice (of the 'good' ones of course :)
But after all, it was a very rewarding 'experience'; as a bonus track, I also met two very good RL friends who finally make their way to SL (and whom I didn't see in RL for ages, so it was really great.) The last moments again caused a bit of tear-dropping, when we asked people to make a group photo, and all the visitors fled to upper platform; it was very moving.
We will run this presentation one more time this Friday (10-12 am CET, don't remember the SL time; it's written on the board on our site). In principle, it is mostly for the group members, but I guess all other interested folks are very welcome.
Besides the presentation (in chat), 30m long board with our 'experience design' process visualization and a nice clip based on the AmEc project, we also distribute a paper about "Experience Evaluation" (and 'free beer' - as 'free beer', not as 'free speech' :)
PS: That's me watching the photo of the first presentation; if I would put it to the frame, I could also make a photo of me watching me watching me... but fortunately, we will run it only three times, so no infinite loops are intended.
Philips Design, a design house of Philips Electronics, continues to recruit people for its research projects and creative workshops in Second Life. You can learn more about these, and other research and design activities of the company at the first site of Philips Design in SL, Co-creative Experiences.
Using interactive posters on the site, you can also join the group of Philips Design Friends, and have a chance to join one of these creative sessions in the (we hope, very near) future. Less patient inhabitants can get their cool freebies right away :)
Both experienced dwellers and total newbies are welcomed - we will try to create interesting and rewarding experiences for very different groups of people in SL.
The very Prokofy Neva, a prominent SL activist, practitioner, theoretician, and simply a guru <drumming> AGREED WITH CENTRALASIAN!</drumming> Yuh-hoo!!
Ok, what is in it for YOU, you ask me?
Well, besides my piece of fame, the posting in TerraNova blog also contains an interesting interview with Howard Rheingold about SL, where he explains what this virtual world still lacks in terms of support of 'cooperation' and 'collaboration', as well a bunch of interesting comments (including of the being agreed with me Prokofy Neva) with various degrees of disagreement with Rheingold's thoughts. Worth reading, if you ask me.
The study is based on the (I assume, email) interviews with 250 respondents and some analytics of the SL usage statistics. The results will not surprise anyone who has minimal exposure and experience with SL, and I believe will not be able to change the opinions of those who don't.
- About 70% perceive Second Life to improve collaboration and communication
- More than 60% perceive that it improves cooperation between people
- People are using Second Life not to change their identity, but rather to visit new places and meet new people
One of the findings, or rather its description, is really funny:
- 56% of respondents perceive Second life as easy to use
